SGT Gardens Competition

To celebrate Somerset gardens we’re launching a Gardens Competition to find the best Somerset garden. We know that Somerset is rich in wonderful gardens which are rarely, if ever, open to the public. They are in country, villages and towns and vary enormously in geography, size, style, age, soil and planting.  What they all have in common is the passion and love of their owners – and this is clearly visible for everyone to see. Somerset is blessed by its temperate climate which enables a wide variety of plants and trees to be grown. We want to celebrate these with their owners and make them better known.

There are two categories – one for Individually Owned gardens (including private gardens already open to the public) and the other for Schools Gardens. The competition opens on 16 September 2019 and the closing date for formal entries is 20 April 2020 (Individually Owned Gardens) and by the first day of the Summer Term 2020 (Schools Gardens).

Every individually owned garden will be visited by one of our distinguished selectors in late May to June 2020. The judges will then personally visit each of the two or three short listed gardens in their category in June or July 2020.

For school gardens, a file must be produced to include photographs, a written diary of the time spent in the garden from September 2019 to the beginning of the 2020 Summer term, the plans of work for the garden planting (to include maintenance) and a short resume of financing and adult input.   The file will be read by the SGT Education Committee to produce a short list and the short listed schools will receive a visit from the judges during the second half of the 2020 Summer term.
